GENERAL MANAGEMENT
In women with gestational diabetes controlled by diet or diet and metformin or glibenclamide, management during labour should be as per normal protocols with the addition of :
- discontinue metformin or glibenclamide when in labour or at induction of labour or when fasting
- Check capillary blood glucose every 2 hours
If capillary blood glucose >6.0 mmol/l then check hourly
If capillary blood glucose >7 mmol/l on two occasions or >10.0 mmol/l then consider commencement of sliding scale (see protocol for labour in women requiring insulin)
**DURING LABOUR TARGET CAPILLARY BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVEL IS UNDER 7MMOL/L**
