PPE for droplet forming procedures

Equipment needed:

  • Lilac surgical mask with visor
  • Blue gloves
  • Apron

Droplets are produced by coughing and sneezing. They don’t travel far and are stopped by a surgical mask. “Droplet forming procedures” include:

  • entering a room with a possible covid-19 positive patient AT ANY TIME inlcluding
  • during labour, using entonox
  • Procedures including suturing, SVD, instrumental delivery
  • any procedure other than intubation/extubation and 20 minutes afterwards

PPE for Aerosol Generating Procedures (AGPs)

Equipment needed:

  • FFP3 mask
  • Hat on top of mask
  • Shield visor
  • Waterproof surgical gown
  • Gloves that cover the fabric of the surgical gown

Aerosol particles are produced when fast air flows over a film. Aerosol particles are small and travel far and stay airborne for longer.

“Aerosol forming” periods include:

  • being in theatre during intubation and extubation of a possible covid-19 positive patient
  • AND for 20 minutes afterwards

Droplet PPE - Regional Anaesthesia

  • Lilac surgical mask with visor
  • Hat on top of mask
  • Full surgical scrub
  • 1st pair of sterile gloves
  • Waterproof surgical gown
  • 2nd pair of sterile gloves

Aerosol (AGP) PPE - General Anaesthesia

  • FFP3 Mask
  • Hat on top of mask
  • Shield Visor
  • 1st pair of sterile gloves
  • Waterproof surgical gown
  • 2nd pair of sterile gloves
